About me.

DSC_0378.jpg

hi, hello.

I’m Kati Knox, I am an artist living in Northern Sweden. I am a poet, currently studying library and information sciences at the master’s level through Borås University here in Sweden. I also make other kinds of visual art and zines, and make music with my partner in our band Mysterium - https://soundcloud.com/mysterium-chaos . Watch this video: https://youtu.be/4kMHydT0wdc?si=TeQjY5GcfCPBTBZe . I was born in Berkeley, California and raised in the Bay Area, a place very dear to my heart that I return to when I can.

Just now, the classes offered out of my tiny barn studio are on hold due to my studies, but sometimes I say yes to a group or private class, so don’t be afraid to send an e-mail if you’re interested.

I am an internationally certified yoga teacher. My first and forever teacher, Alice Joanou, introduced me to the Krishnamacharya lineage of Yoga and trained me in Vinyasa Krama during a five-year apprenticeship between the years 2007-2012. Vinyasa Krama is a form of Hatha yoga where breath and movement are aligned and the sequence is intelligently placed. There is a big emphasis on the breath, and an emphasis on healing. Alice remains one of my closest mentors, teachers, and friends and I am forever grateful to her mentorship, guidance, friendship and knowledge.

In 2012 my yogic journey took me to India, a place I longed to visit, where I trained further as an instructor and yogic scholar and assisted master teachers in Kerala at Krishna Chaitanya’s AyurYoga Eco-Ashram, now based just outside of Mysore, check it out here https://www.ayuryoga-ashram.com/ . I return to India every few years (life allowing) to teach and deepen my own practice, and in 2016 I returned to Krishna’s ashram and completed a 500hr Advanced Yoga Teacher Training.

My classes are guided by aligning breath and movement, creating the space for the practitioner to tap in to their own ability to heal and to build tools of accountability and awareness. I believe in finding ways to honor tradition while forging our own paths, adapting and evolving to the needs of everyday, current life. Often for me this means I’ve got to turn tradition on it’s head and create new traditions, so as to include all bodies and abilities, to create an inclusive space where truly all are welcome. I see the practice as creative and alive, something that transcends life on and off the mat. I believe the breath is the guide and am grateful to all of my teachers, my son Sid being my greatest teacher so far.

My areas of focus are in yoga for creativity, vinyasa krama, pranayama, pre-natal yoga, trauma informed yoga, yoga nidra, and yin yoga. I believe in the power of sound, and encourage my students to find their voice through mantra and chanting. In 2013 I attended James Fox of the Prison Yoga Project’s special training in San Francisco, allowing me to teach yoga and mindfulness practices in prisons and rehabilitation facilities. My other areas of study and research are in Literature and Poetry, in 2009 I received my Masters of Fine Arts in Poetry from Mills College in Oakland, California.

Yoga is a tool for living, a place to (if you’re willing) hold up the mirror to oneself and begin to recognize the patterns the body, heart, and mind hold onto and repeat. We gain tools to look at the less lovely parts and rather than rejecting them we see them, accept them, and work to transform them where needed. It’s a place to start the work of inner awareness, healing the self, taking accountability, and showing up for yourself and your community. It is also a space to celebrate, embracing both the dark and light. It’s practical! And totally possible to tap in to your natural, innate spirituality.

You’re welcome to arrive just as you are, right where you are, and create your own direct experience with life. I look forward to practicing with you.

Thank you & Peace

Kati
